COVID-19: Greece is Reopening

On Wednesday afternoon, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that Greece is opening its tourism season as of July 1st. The announcement stated, amongst other points that, there will be no COVID-19 testing before arrival in the country and no 14-day mandatory quarantine. Sample testing will be randomly performed, though, while in the country.

Foreign tourism will start on June 15th, where the arrival of visitors from approximately 20 countries will be permitted. He referred to “visitors with good epidemiological characteristics,” while other criteria to be evaluated; road access, medium flight distance, diaspora communities.

In his speech, the Prime Minister mentioned that the first to be allowed would be from “the Balkans to the Baltic” and “northern Europe.”. So far, the countries on the first list are Cyprus, Isreal, China, Japan, Australia, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Albania, FYROM, Bosnia, Croatia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. This list is not final and subject to change. A second group of countries will be added on July 1st, except for some countries with negative epidemiological characteristics.

Key dates of the roadmap laid out by the Prime Minister are:

Flights

June 15th: Opening of Athens International Airport to flights from all countries with good epidemiological data (see above list).

July 1st: Opening of Athens International Airport to flights from the new list (to be announced near the end of June) and of all Greek regional airports in tourist destinations.

Accommodation

May 25th: Opening of yachting (domestic)

June 1st: Opening of all-year hotels, camping facilities

June 15th: Opening of seasonal hotels and accommodations

Health provisions

Health facilities are being enhanced in tourist destinations with high risk and mentioned that the assignment of a doctor and a “quarantine area” are in touristic destinations in case of an infection.

The Greek government is eventually hoping to lift all remaining restrictions on July 15th, considering that the COVID-19 virus remains under control.
